Chicks on Brown Rice, Hens on Green Corn, Sun on the Floor
Master Cho Han-kyu, interpreted by Kim Chang, Founder of Korean Natural Farming (Janong)
Spoken in Korean. Translated to English and checked line by line.
The livestock section starts. Cho shows his self-ventilating pen and skylit chicken house, then raises chicks: brown rice first, the 3-day yolk, egg yolk with bamboo leaves, then greens like a cow. Green corn chopped and fermented with IMO4, LAB and grape yeast becomes feed; his feed-plot arithmetic gets checked by the room. He ends on the layer house: openings at 36 cm, sun across the floor once a day, and a rice-straw floor with no flies and no smell.
What they found
How does Cho house chickens and raise chicks so the feed is cheap and the house has no smell?
Livestock begins at 1:37:25 with slides: a 3-D drawing of a pen with airflow arrows, a long chicken pen with bamboo behind it, chicks on brown rice, a chick-rearing slide with bamboo in the brooder. At about 1:59 Cho draws the feed plot on the flip chart ('1.8m', '910株', '1800kg'). From 2:05 the layer-house slide shows hens on a straw floor under an open skylight.
- Chick starter — Cho: brown rice is the first feed. The yolk carried in the belly feeds the chick for 3 days. After day 3 give 'mother's milk', egg yolk (interpreter: boil it and shred it), with bamboo leaves. Later lots of greens 'like a cow'; in Hawaiʻi, corn leaves.
- Homemade yeast from grapes — Cho: buy burst grapes, put them in a container, cover, leave 7 to 8 hours (interpreter: about seven), stir, take off the skins and keep the flesh: that is the yeast. No sugar, no quantities.
- Fermented green-corn feed — Corn at two months (about 1 m 10 cm), cut whole with the young ears, chopped small with a chopper; add IMO4, lactic acid bacteria (Protectors, LAB) and the yeast; ferment. No quantities given.
- Feed plot (as drawn, and as checked) — Cho: one pyeong, 1.8 m × 1.8 m, corn at 20 cm spacing, 2 kg per plant. He wrote 910 plants (then 900) and 1,800 kg, enough for 9,000 chickens at 200 g. The audience's check: 9 × 9 = 81 plants, so about 162 kg per cut.
- Layer house — Skylight that opens; openings at chicken height, 36 cm; wire mesh instead of walls; partitions 36 cm high; soil floor with rice straw. House plans from CGNF Hawaiʻi.
-
Sun on a sheet-iron roof pulls fresh air through the pen
The hot air under the roof expands, gets light and flies off; the hotter it gets, the faster fresh air comes in. Floor moisture and smell blow away. Cho's patented design; blueprint fee, 30% to CGNF Hawaiʻi.

A skylight puts sun on every part of the floor at least once a day
Bamboo forest behind the pen. No smell, no flies. German scientists and company heads asked for exclusive rights for Europe; Cho refused: farmers only.
▶ 1:40:45 From the slides
-
A hatchling's first feed is brown rice
Vets and livestock nutritionists say it will kill them. Cho: these chicks eat well and grow well.
▶ 1:45:10 From the slides
-
A Hawaiʻi farmer with 15,000 chickens: IMO4 alone, no smell, no disease
He visited that day. His report, as Cho tells it.
▶ 1:47:28 As spoken
-
Brown-rice chicks grow intestines about twice as long
Longer digestion, so the hen can eat what was never counted as feed and still lay; feed costs drop.
▶ 1:49:29 As spoken
-
The yolk in a chick's belly is 3 days of food
Chicks from the hatchery won't die in those 3 days without feed.
▶ 1:51:05 As spoken
-
After day 3: egg yolk with bamboo leaves
Bamboo leaf has the toughest fiber of the green leaves; raised on it, the birds later eat softer greens and their chlorophyll easily. Raise them to eat grass like a cow.
▶ 1:51:42 As spoken
-
Corn grows 1 m 10 cm in two months; cut it then
The interpreter first said 2 m 10, then corrected herself.
▶ 1:54:13 As spoken
-
Chop the green corn, add IMO4, LAB and yeast, ferment: top-quality feed
Whole plant, young ears and all; don't pick the ears.
▶ 1:54:41 As spoken
-
Grape yeast: burst grapes covered 7–8 hours, skins removed
Cho said 7 to 8 hours; the interpreter said seven.
▶ 1:55:18 As spoken
-
A grown chicken eats 200 g of feed a day
The basis for the feed plot.
▶ 1:57:20 As spoken
-
A 1.8 m square of corn at 20 cm holds 81 plants, about 162 kg, not 900 plants and 1,800 kg
Cho's board: 910株 (then 900) × 2 kg = 1,800 kg = 9,000 chickens. An audience member: 1.8 m at 20 cm is 9 by 9, 81 plants. The interpreter changed 910 to 900 and the room's point was never answered. 81 × 2 kg = 162 kg. Even 1,800 kg would be one day's feed for 9,000 birds.
-
Hawaiʻi is warm all year: six crops of corn, and the feed bill drops below half
'Six times' was not interpreted; 'per year' is not clearly heard. Use a chopper.
▶ 2:02:28 As spoken
-
Wall openings sit at chicken height, 36 cm, so fresh air meets their noses
A grown hen standing with her head up is 36 cm.
▶ 2:05:36 From the slides
-
The sun crosses the whole floor once a day; the ultraviolet sterilizes it
Through the open skylight.
▶ 2:06:29 From the slides
-
Wire mesh, no walls; partitions 36 cm high. At 30 cm the hens see each other and fight
▶ 2:06:56 From the slides
-
Rice straw carries gochogyun (hay bacillus), which breaks down the droppings by evening
Morning droppings are gone by evening. Scratching sinks them into the soil floor, where they turn into feed: about 30% of what the birds eat. No flies, no smell.
▶ 2:09:49 As spoken
- The feed-plot numbers on the board don't add up: 1.8 m at 20 cm spacing is 81 plants, as the audience said. Cho's 2017 poultry course gives 81 plants and 162 kg. 'Six crops' a year is heard once, not clearly; the course says four or five.
- No quantities are given for the fermented corn feed or the yeast.
- The doubled gut and the 15,000-chicken farm are Cho's statements; no data shown.
- Only the interpreter names Hilo as the site of the planned 6,000-pyeong facility.
- Start chicks on brown rice, then egg yolk with bamboo leaves after day 3, then plenty of greens.
- Grow corn for its green stalk, cut at about two months, chop it and ferment it with IMO4, LAB and yeast to assist the birds' feed.
- Plan a feed plot on real numbers: a 1.8 m square at 20 cm spacing holds 81 plants.
- Make yeast from burst grapes: cover 7–8 hours, then take out the skins.
- Build openings at the bird's height, let the sun cross the floor daily, and lay rice straw on a soil floor.

Brown rice first, then bamboo leaves His book gives the same order: whole brown rice first (3 days for layers, 1 for broilers), then bamboo leaves. Here he adds why: the 3-day yolk carries the chick.

Differs
Feed plot: 1.8 × 1.8 m of corn at 20 cm, 2 kg a plant His April 2017 poultry course gives the same unit and spacing but 81 stalks and about 162 kg per unit, four crops a year. That matches the audience here, not the 900 plants and 1,800 kg on tonight's board.

Differs
Grape yeast: burst grapes, covered, 7–8 hours, no sugar His Advanced book crushes 1 kg of grapes with 200–300 g of sugar and ferments it. In another 2017 class he said three hours under a blanket. Tonight: no sugar, 7 to 8 hours.

1:37:25 So now we're doing livestock. Here is the roof, and this roof is galvanized sheet iron. Iron. When the sun beats down, the inside gets hot. It makes the air hot. It expands, right? So when sun hit that iron metal, the roof gets hot. So underneath, the air is starting to expand. As it expands it gets light, so it flies off, doesn't it? So when the air expands, it becomes very light, so all the hot air just goes out.
1:38:16 Then the hotter it gets, the faster the wind comes in and blows out, so the smell on the floor blows away. So the hot air on top, when it gets hot, the air moves very fast. From here the new air comes in, and then they bring out the air, go out very fast, so all the smell in the pen goes out fast also. This way, fresh air always comes in. With this system always there's a fresh air. Then the moisture on the floor blows off, the smell blows off, so it becomes a very clean livestock pen.
1:39:03 so when you do this way there is always clean air and also always dry moisture goes out also so very clean So if you take this and put up a building, the blueprints all exist. It is a patented invention. If you want to use it, you have to pay a small patent fee. He developed this, I mean, the livestock pen. It has a patent. So I have to charge you a little bit if you want that, you know, blueprint.
1:39:55 If you pay me the fee, I'm going to give 30% of it to CGNF Hawaii. And when you pay that, to the CGNF Hawaii office I'll give 30% and go. That way this place lives, and I live too. When I do that, the decision that Hawaii can run and also I can make living. Got it? Got it. This is the chicken pen.
1:40:44 There is a green part, that is the window. It can close and open. This green part here is the roof; it's a skylight. It opens and closes. So because the other side is all open, and then when we open the window on top, And from the front here the sunlight moves along; as it shifts across, the sunlight goes in, so the whole pen gets sunlight at least once a day. when the sun hits, the sun will hit each part of the inside of the pen. So it cleanses, sanitizes the pen. [Audio unclear] Behind it is a bamboo forest.
1:41:30 So even if you raise [many] chickens here, there's no manure smell. No odor. So even we have lots of chicken in there, there is no smell at all. It is a poultry house with no flies and no smell. So scholars and the heads of big companies from Germany came to tour it. So from Germany, the scientists came, and then looked at this chicken pen. Those people came, took one look at this, slapped their knees, and asked how this was developed in little Korea. They were very surprised.
1:42:15 In Korea, who developed such a magnificent chicken pen? So what those people wanted was, to roll this method out in Europe, So they asked him, can we have your ownership of this livestock pen design? they asked me to give them the exclusive rights. They were asking him, can we have that ownership? So I refused. Because I cannot give it to merchants. He said, I cannot give to that who wanted to make money, the businessmen.
1:43:11 I cannot give this idea and the blueprint to the business people. What I mean is, I will hand it on to farmers. So they kept contacting me, but I did not respond. After they contacted me several times, I always said no. Since on this earth every technology only spreads once Europe recognizes it, they said they would take responsibility for that too, so hand it over to them. And then they said all the high technology coming from Europe. So let us have that
1:43:59 ownership. They will keep on asking him. So likewise in Hawaii, if a merchant asks me for this, I won't give it. If farmers want it, [I will]. I mean, even in Hawaii, if a businessman wants his ownership, I will [not] give that. Only the farmer wants it, and I'll give it to them. So people like Joe McGinn and Steve Boloson, and the coffee farms here, Drake, [...], the citrus grower over there: I'll hand it to people like that. Only when farmers live well does Hawaii live well.
1:44:44 I would like to give this to Joe McGinn, Steve, or Drake or Carol. I want to give those to farmers. Mango Steve. Mango Steve, the farmer. When the chicks hatch, the very first thing is brown rice. If you give a one-day-old chick, the first thing you give them is brown rice. But to veterinarians and livestock nutritionists, if you say you feed brown rice, they all object, saying you'll kill all the chicks.
1:45:29 So if I tell the animal doctor or scientist, or a scientist, you're going to kill all those chicks. But these chicks are chicks raised on brown rice. The scholars' position is that you should raise them on supplements and the like. So should I take the side of the chicks that eat well and grow well, or the side of the scholars? So when I give the brown rice to the chick, they grow very well. But the scientists tell me, give this, this feed and that feed, and etc. Should I listen to those scientists?
1:46:18 No. But today's poultry farmers trust the methods the scholars develop. Even if you do Natural Farming, they don't believe in it. Chicken farmers, they don't believe me. They only believe the scientists. But today, during the day, from here in Hawaii, But today, the president owner of this chicken farm, the owner of a farm raising 15,000 chickens came by.
1:47:03 I think he has 15,000 chickens. He came and visited him. So I asked him: is it going all right with Natural Farming? He said, 'All right? What do you mean, it's excellent.' He does the natural farming. So he asked him, how are your chickens? Oh, they are doing so well. He said with only IMO4 there's no smell and nothing gets sick. He said, I just use IMO4, and no smell and no disease. So he came today and asked me to go to his farm [after the seminar].
1:47:52 So what I told him was: if you take everyone attending here, buy them dinner and lunch, then I'll talk it over. When I said that, he just left. He said, after finish this seminar, come with me, let's go visit my farm. Okay, I misunderstood. Anyway, he told him, if I have to visit your farm, I have to take all my students and you have to buy lunch and dinner, then I will visit your farm. He didn't say anything and he left. Then he said, let's meet again and he left.
1:48:38 Yes, so I see he only wants to receive, he doesn't want to give. None of you here would be like that, I'm sure. That's what I saw. I hope you guys not that way. Eo! Eo! 8:30? His wife said, stop. Okay, 8:30. [...] she says it's 8:30. [...] I'm going to finish all of this. Don't listen to her. I need to finish this.
1:49:29 [Audio unclear] [...] the length of the intestines doubles. Oh, when you give, they give them all, feed the brown rice, their intestine developed doubled. The intestines getting longer means the digestion process gets longer. That means when the intestine is doubled, that means their digestive system is prolonged. Then you can make a laying hen that eats even what was never considered feed until now, and still lays eggs. Because it eats and digests even things that were never accepted as chicken feed, Because they don't consider that brown rice is not healthy, but they eat those brown rice
1:50:14 [partly unclear] the gut [develops], so feed costs less and there's no extra expense. and they grow healthy, so you save money, and they are also very healthy. Do you understand? Chicken doesn't have a mother's milk. Chicks have no mother's milk.
1:50:59 Chicken doesn't have a milk, but then the chick, when they born, they carry the But instead of mother's milk, when it hatches, it comes out carrying the yolk in its lower belly. yellow yolk at the bottom, and that's how they born. That is only enough to eat for 3 days. That yolk lasts only about 3 days. So when you buy them from the hatchery, That yolk is only three days food. for 3 days they won't die, because they have that mother's milk. So when you buy the chicks, three days they feed themselves with yolk, so they won't die for three days, even you don't feed them.
1:51:41 So once 3 days have passed, you have to give them mother's milk. So after three days later you need to give egg yolk. You need to boil it and then shred it and give to them. And while they are on mother's milk, give them bamboo leaves. So while they are eating the egg yolk, both egg yolk, same time you need to give them bamboo leaves. Of all the leafy greens that have chlorophyll, the one with the toughest fiber is bamboo leaf, isn't it? So that bamboo leaf has a very tough fiber,
1:52:27 same time there is chlorophyll, lots of chlorophyll is in there. So because they ate bamboo leaves when young, Because they train with very high-fiber greens, even tougher greens, they can consume while once they're grown, [greens] far [softer] than these bamboo leaves, [...] they can take in all of them and their chlorophyll. they are growing up. So you have to raise them into chickens that eat grass like a cow. So you need to raise them like eating greens, lots of greens like cow.
1:53:14 In Hawaii grass grows really well, doesn't it? In Hawaii, the grass grows very, very well. And the one that grows best is corn. The plant that grows very fast is corn. Now, which is tougher, bamboo leaves or corn leaves? So which one is tougher, bamboo leaves or corn leaves? Which one is tougher? Bamboo leaves. Bamboo leaves are stronger. Once they are grown, [compared with] bamboo, the weaker, softer... ...corn, they'd eat even better, I think. So because we feed them such tough greens,
1:54:02 they will eat the corn leaves really, really well. So what I mean is, having corn planted, [once planted,] in 2 months it grows 1 m 10 cm. Plant it, and in two months it grows 1 m 10 cm. So when you plant the corn about two months later, their height is about 2 meters 10 centimeters. the two-meter, ten... one meter and ten centimeters. Then you cut it down and chop it. You chop it up small. So you chop that corn leaves Put in lactic acid bacteria and yeast and ferment it, and it's top-quality feed.
1:54:56 and then you add IMO4, lactic acid bacteria and yeast, and you feed them, and then it became a high quality feed. Yeast. … hyomo — that's yeast. To make that yeast: grapes, you know the burst grapes? Buy burst grapes, take them, put them in a container, and cover it. Keep it covered for about 7 to 8 hours and it turns into yeast. Then you stir it, take off the skins, leave only the flesh inside, and all of that is yeast.
1:55:42 Do you know how to make yeast? The grape that's burst open. You put it in the container, you just mash and then cover with something, and then let it sit about seven hours, and then you take out only the peel, and then leave the inside, and then that is 100% yeast. That's the yeast. That's how you make yeast. Homemade yeast. Grape. Can you repeat that again? Okay. So the grape that has open,
1:56:27 yeah, so it's ripe, burst. So you put it in a container, you mix it, and then you cover about seven hours, and then you remove only the skin and leave inside in the container. That is the yeast, homemade yeast. So you take that [yeast] and the [chopped] corn, add IMO4 and lactic acid bacteria, ferment it all together, and it becomes top grade. So I'm going to repeat it again. So to make a high quality feed for the chicken, you grow the corn and then cut down and then you chop it. You add IMO4 and the lactobacillus bacteria and yeast.
1:57:17 And it became a high quality feed. Now, a grown chicken eats 200 g of feed a day. So the adult chickens, they eat about 200 grams of feed, one chicken. Now if you plant corn on one pyeong, 1 m 80 by 1 m 80, that's 3.6 square meters. Then if you plant [corn] there at 20 cm spacing, 900 … 990 … (the words after the numbers are unclear) 990, okay? No, no, no, no. So, to grow this feed plot,
1:58:03 1.8, no, 1 meter 80 centimeters times 1 meter 80 centimeters, You plant the corn seed, the length is only 20 cm, you give a space 20 cm. When you do that, you will grow 900 corn stalks.
1:59:14 So he made a picture. So this is the plot, your planting area. 1.8 meters by 1.8 meters. And the space you put the corn seed, the 20 centimeters, when you do that, you can plant 910 corn plants. This piece [one plant] comes to 2 kg. So one stalk,
2:00:01 the weight is two kilogram. How much comes out of here? … 910 [plants] … (rest unclear) So total when you harvest this thing, because we have 910 plants, and each plant weighs 2 kilograms, so total weight of the crop is 1,800 kilograms. And since a grown chicken eats 200 g, So, and one chicken eats 200 grams, so then you can feed how many?
2:00:48 9,000 birds. You can feed 9,000 chickens in this field. You harvest this corn, you can feed 9,000 chickens. The math doesn't come out. For how long? At 1.8 meters on the side, you can't get 910 seeds in there. Only 20 millimeters apart or 20 centimeters apart? Oh, is this 20 mm… 20 cm? Yes, 20 cm. Yeah, it is 20 centimeters. But that's only 9 seeds by 9 seeds. It's only 81 plants. Am I wrong?
2:01:33 Keep going… you're asking whether you can keep harvesting it? I … (rest unclear) Sorry, this is not 910, it's 900. So it does come out to 1,800 kg, doesn't it? So it comes out 1800 kilograms. Because one stalk of the plant is 2 kilograms weight, so it comes out 1,800 kilograms.
2:02:22 And in Hawaii, because the weather is warm, Hawaii is always warm, so … six times … So if you plant this corn, cut it, and make it into feed, the feed bill comes to less than half. so if you use corn this way you save more than 50 percent Now [a machine] cuts it up like this, just like this … 50% … (rest unclear)
2:03:12 So they call it a chopper, with this little machine, and then you feed them with the IMO4, lactic acid bacteria and the yeast, and then you will save 50% of the feed. So the feed costs far less. That's why you can save lots of money. Only using the greens? You're not letting it come to seed? That's only 50%? [She asks Cho:] When you grow the corn, do you use the ears too? You don't pick the corn. The ears form, and the young ears [go in as they are]…
2:03:57 Oh, you don't harvest the ear. The young ear, you just use everything, you chop it up a small piece, yeah. Ear and all. Ear and all. Yeah, because it's only two months old. And here, this is a chick drinking water. There's a little chick drinking water. That chick takes a sip of water in its beak and has to look up at the sky once before it can swallow. So the chicks always dip the water, then they have to look at the sky. That's how they drink water. So even while drinking water, the chick thanks God. So these chicks, even when they are drinking, they always thank the Lord.
2:04:46 But man, the lord of all creation, eats the food he's given and doesn't know how to say thank you. And lots of humans, they eat all this food, they don't know how to thank to the Lord. That's why people suffer. That's why these humans suffer a lot. Next. So here … it's open, you see: the skylight. So right now this is the chicken pen, we open the window for them. And the back is open. Also in the back, there is an opening.
2:05:35 And how far do you open it? You open it exactly to the chicken's height. The open space is the same as a chicken's height. A grown chicken standing up straight with its head raised, like this, is 36 cm. A fully grown chicken standing up, height up to the top, is about 36 centimeters. So when the fresh air comes in, it all has to go straight to their noses. So when fresh air comes in, it should meet their nose. Because the skylight is open, the sunlight comes in. And also on the roof, there is a window open, so the sunshine is coming onto their bed.
2:06:29 So once a day, without fail, [the sunlight passes over] the chickens' floor… So, once a day, the sunshine passes over their whole floor. So it all gets sterilized by ultraviolet light. Because of the ultraviolet, the floor is sanitized. And this wire mesh: there are no walls, it's all just wire mesh. So there is no wall, it's all wire. There is no wall between the stalls. And then that height, a little height, is 36 centimeters, the same as a chicken's height. And this height is 36 cm.
2:07:19 But suppose this were not 36 cm but 30 cm. Then the chicken on this side sees the chicken on that side. It can see it. Then they fight. if that little wall is less than 36 cm, let's say it's 30 cm, then they can see the other stall's chickens, they start to fight. So if any of you want to raise chickens, contact CGNF Hawaii and get the poultry-house design and everything else from them. So if you want to raise chickens, contact CGNF Hawaii and get this blueprint. So if as many as 30 people here sign up, I'll come here to teach a specialist poultry [course].
2:08:12 If there are 30 people who want to raise chickens, he will come just for an advanced chicken course. If natural farming in Hawaii is to grow fast, you all have to work with us; then it spreads fast. So if you want to spread this natural farming, you need to help us so we can spread this natural farming. On 6,000 pyeong of land, a basic natural farming facility will be built. This time in Hilo, there's a 6,000 pyeong, I don't know how much acre, 6,000… five acres,
2:09:05 five acres, there is a Natural Farming Research Center that will be built. It's going to build. Then I'll come here too. And then I can come to Hawaii also. Then I can see you all often. So we can meet each other very often. Now, here we laid rice straw. So he put the rice straw on the floor. Rice straw carries gochogyun (hay bacillus), a microbe that breaks down protein.
2:09:58 On the rice straw, there is a microbe that breaks down protein. There is gochogyun. So it's there; you lay the straw here, and the chickens drop their dung on it. As the dung gets buried in the straw, the protein in it, the nitrogen, is broken down. Because of that microorganism that breaks down protein, when they have their waste, all the nitrogen is broken down very easily. Dung dropped in the morning is all broken down by evening. So if they poop in the morning, by the time in the evening, it's going to all disappear.
2:10:49 Then, because the chickens scratch it, it sinks down. Because they always scratch, those dry proteins sink into the floor. And since this floor is a soil floor, it mixes with [the soil] and turns into feed. So our floor is always soil. So when the nitrogen meets with the soil, it starts to form, so it becomes their feed. So [raised] the natural farming way, they dig up and eat the droppings, their own dung, from the floor, and that covers 30% of their feed. So they scratch and they eat from the floor; about 30% of their feed comes from the floor.
2:11:41 And there are no flies and no smell. Also there is no fly and no smell.
