Livestock pen design schematics
From the KNF library
The library covers poultry pens. It has no cow pen plan.
For a small start, Drake points to the Hubbel Bubble coop. It is a small design documented in a University of Hawaii poultry publication on naturalfarminghawaii.net. (Office Hours Ep. 67, 33:25)
For three to six laying hens, Drake says skip the enclosed house-style coops from farm stores. Use a simple open floor with a feeder, roost, and nest box. (Office Hours Ep. 79, 31:31)
Design the pen around the animals' natural urges, not your own convenience. (Office Hours Ep. 78, 56:22) The floor is a deep litter system. Its beneficial microbes outcompete the stinky, disease-causing anaerobic pathogens. (Cho's Solutions, p. 20)
Cho's layout diagrams add two details. The horizontal bar arches, rising from front to back, so chickens rest without crashing into one another. (Cho, Theory, p. 132) The feed container sits on a straight line between the horizontal bar and the water bucket. (Cho, Theory, p. 132)
